Many of the streets in central Abingdon carry large amounts of traffic causing significant congestion, air quality, and road safety problems, as well as reducing the attractiveness of some of the town’s historic shopping streets.
Together with the Vale of White Horse District Council and Abingdon Town Council, we have developed an improvement scheme for the town centre. The scheme includes:
- Making Stratton Way two-way and providing improved bus waiting facilities;
- Narrowing the road in Stert Street and High Street, allowing the pavements to be widened and providing improved loading facilities;
- Introducing a 20mph zone for the central area; and
- Using linked traffic lights to control the flow of traffic into the central area.
Construction is due to start early in 2006.
Other schemes:
- Henley town centre - traffic management measures
- Improvements to Howes Lane, Bicester
- Banbury Railway station access improvements
- Schemes relating to developments in the next five years in most major towns
