It is estimated that around 20% of peak hour traffic is created by the “school run”. We’ve been working with schools for many years to develop individual Travel Plans tailored to their local circumstances.

School Travel Plans aim to cut congestion caused by the school run, reduce traffic danger, and support pupils who are already travelling by more sustainable means. Our aim is for all schools to have a travel plan in place by 2009, a year ahead of the Government’s national target.

To support school travel plans, the Smarter Choices programme will deliver effective low cost improvements at schools or on routes to schools, or provide funding to help schools introduce improvements like better cycle parking on their own premises.
