road safetyvehicle activated displays

Vehicle Activated Displays (VADs) are an increasingly popular way of encouraging people to drive at an appropriate speed for the road conditions.

VADs are signs that respond to the speed of each approaching vehicle to encourage drivers to keep to speed limits or to warn them of dangers ahead. They are often used to encourage drivers to slow down in advance of points on the road where there is a history of accidents – for example, sharp bends, crossroads, busy shopping streets and so on.

The County Council will continue to use these devices to remind drivers of their responsibility to drive at a safe speed, helping to reinforce speed limits at specific places, and communicating the more general message that sticking to speed limits is important.
