Some accident problems can be tackled by improving the design or layout of roads or junctions to make them work more safely and reduce the likelihood of collisions.
The kinds of improvements we’ll be making are likely to be similar to what we’ve done in the past – installing traffic lights at junctions, adjusting lane markings at roundabouts, improving sightlines, improving street lighting and so on.
A major part of our work is monitoring the effectiveness of the improvements we make to roads. After making changes to a road or junction, we review how the pattern of accidents has changed to establish whether what we’ve done has worked as expected. This process gives us invaluable information for future work.
